While I wait for NieR: Automata to come to Switch for my 2nd playthrough (why not!) I restarted Platinum's incredible Astral Chain for my Year of the Hack & Slash! This game has everything, dual character action, crazy storylines, twists, investigations and (best of all) CATS!

At first the combat in this game is just straight up confusing. You have 1 weapon that has 3 modes, baton, gun and gladius. Each mode has different combos you can perform with ZR. THEN you also have the Legions which are these chained up creatures that you fight along side of.

You get multiple Legion during the game each with their own particular set of skills. This changes the fighting style & they solve environmental puzzles. This brings me to level design. Big open spaces with lots to explore while you are knocking off quests and solving crime.

NONE OF THIS MATTERS BECAUSE YOU ADOPT CATS! There are secret cats in the levels you have to SAVE! You take them to your special safehouse & feed them & keep them safe. This is a 10/10 feature. The rest of this game could be trash (it's not) & I would still say play it (I am)!

That's credits for Astral Chain! What a crazy couple of end chapters. Without spoilers, I will say a game that has a complex premise for combat, the final boss did not disappoint. It was strange and beautiful, and extremely challenging. I had to restart 5 or so times.

After the credits roll, another chapter opens up with challenge modes, some new quests as well as the ability to go back through previous chapters and knock off things you may have missed. This is very welcome! There is also a little story wrap-up that I really liked.

My final thoughts - this game gives you more than it asks for. it never feels like work nor is it unfair. It's so well crafted and should be confusing, but by the end you and your legions are just dancing around the enemies. If you own a switch, this should be on it. PLUS CATS!
